Percentages: Practice Set 2
Percentages: Practice Set 2 gives a fresh set of questions on finding a percentage of an amount, percentage increase and decrease, expressing one amount as a percentage of another, and reverse percentage problems, without a calculator. It follows on from the first Percentages set, building the same skills to greater fluency.
Method
- Find 10% of an amount by dividing by 10, then use this to build other percentages, for example halving it for 5% or doubling it for 20%.
- To find a percentage of an amount directly, write the percentage as a decimal and multiply.
- For a percentage increase, add the increase to the original amount, or multiply by the single decimal multiplier, so a 15% increase means multiplying by 1.15.
- For a percentage decrease, subtract the decrease from the original amount, or multiply by the single decimal multiplier, so a 15% decrease means multiplying by 0.85.
- To express one amount as a percentage of another, write it as a fraction of the total, then convert that fraction to a percentage.
- For reverse percentage problems that ask for the original amount, identify what percentage the given amount represents, find 1% by dividing, then scale up to 100%.
Worked example
A television priced at 320 pounds is reduced by 15% in a sale. Work out the sale price.
- Find 10% of 320 pounds by dividing by 10: 32 pounds.
- Find 5% by halving the 10% value: 32 / 2 = 16 pounds.
- Add the 10% and 5% values to find 15%: 32 + 16 = 48 pounds.
- Subtract the 15% reduction from the original price: 320 - 48.
- Work out the subtraction: 320 - 48 = 272 pounds.

(b) A shop assistant claims that a 10% discount followed by a 5% discount is the same as a single 15% discount. Show that the assistant is wrong, and find the single percentage discount that is equivalent to the two discounts combined.
