Method

- Be alert to more than one plausible relationship for the first pair; if your first guess does not produce a sensible answer among the options, reconsider the relationship (for example, opposite versus part-to-whole).
- For compound-word questions, try each candidate word both before and after the given word, since compound words can be formed in either order (for example, 'sun' plus 'flower' but 'flower' plus 'pot').
- Work at a steady pace across a section that mixes several question types, since recognising the type quickly is often the biggest time-saver on a GL-style mixed section.
- If stuck, eliminate answer options that are only loosely related rather than precisely matching the relationship, since GL-style distractors are often designed to seem plausible but fail on close inspection.

PUPPY is to DOG as KITTEN is to ? Choose the best word from: (a) cat (b) mouse (c) puppy (d) litter.
- Identify the relationship in the first pair: a PUPPY is a young DOG.
- Apply the same relationship to the second word: a KITTEN is a young ?
- Test each option: (a) cat, a kitten is a young cat, this fits; (b) mouse, a kitten is not a young mouse; (c) puppy, this is the wrong animal family entirely; (d) litter, a litter is a group, not a single animal.
- Confirm (a) is the only option where the same 'young version of' relationship holds.
- Final answer: (a) cat.
