Every autumn evening, as the sky over the Somerset Levels begins to dim, something extraordinary happens. Thousands of starlings gather above the reedbeds, and instead of settling down to roost individually, they begin to fly together as one vast, shifting shape. Birdwatchers call this display a murmuration, and it can involve anywhere from a few hundred birds to several hundred thousand.
From a distance, a murmuration looks almost like smoke curling across the sky. The flock stretches into long ribbons, folds into tight spirals, and occasionally collapses into a dense, swirling ball before spreading out again. No single bird appears to be leading the group, yet the whole flock turns, dives and rises together with astonishing precision.
For many years, scientists were puzzled about how starlings manage this. It was once thought that each bird might somehow sense the movement of the entire flock at once, almost as though the group shared one mind. However, research carried out by physicists and biologists studying flocks over Rome eventually revealed a simpler explanation. Each starling, it turns out, pays close attention to roughly seven of its nearest neighbours. When one of those seven birds changes direction or speed, the starling copies the movement almost instantly. Because every bird is doing this at the same time, a change that starts with just one or two birds can ripple outward through the whole flock within seconds, creating the illusion of a single, coordinated mind.
Scientists believe murmurations serve several purposes. The most widely accepted explanation is defence against predators. A peregrine falcon hunting alone finds it far harder to target one starling within a constantly shifting crowd than it would a single bird flying by itself; the swirling shape confuses the falcon's aim and makes a successful strike less likely. Roosting in large numbers may also help the birds share information about good feeding areas, and it keeps them warmer overnight by reducing heat loss in the tightly packed roost.
Murmurations do not happen everywhere. They are most spectacular where large numbers of starlings gather to roost together in winter, often near reedbeds, piers or industrial structures that offer safety and shelter from the cold. In the United Kingdom, well-known viewing spots include the Somerset Levels, Aberystwyth's Victorian pier, and Gretna Green near the Scottish border. Visitors often arrive an hour before sunset, wrapped in coats and scarves, and wait patiently as small groups of starlings begin to gather. Within twenty minutes, those small groups can swell into an enormous, swirling flock, before the birds finally drop, almost as one, into the reeds to roost for the night.
Despite decades of research, no one has fully explained every detail of how starlings coordinate so precisely, and scientists continue to study murmurations using high-speed cameras and computer models. For now, the birds keep their secret remarkably well, offering up one of Britain's most breathtaking natural spectacles each winter, to anyone willing to stand outside in the cold and look up.
