GL-Style Mixed Mock 8: Maths and Verbal Reasoning
GL-Style Mixed Mock 8 pairs perimeter, area, angle and sequence maths questions with a verbal reasoning section drawn from number series, number connections, missing-number balance puzzles and logic deduction, the GL question families that reward working with numbers rather than words. Because both sections lean on numerical pattern-spotting, it carries a slightly longer verbal reasoning section than a vocabulary-led mock.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- For a perimeter or area question, write down the formula you are using before you substitute any numbers in, since a shape described only in words is easy to picture wrongly once you start calculating.
- For an angles question, note which angle fact applies (angles on a straight line sum to 180 degrees, angles in a triangle sum to 180 degrees, angles round a point sum to 360 degrees) before you subtract anything.
- For a number series, write out the gap between each pair of terms underneath the sequence; if the gaps are not constant, check whether the gaps themselves are growing or shrinking by a pattern.
- For a missing-number balance question, work out the side of the equation with no gap first, then use that value to work backwards through the side that contains the missing number.
- For a logic deduction question, turn each sentence into a simple order or list on paper as you read it, rather than trying to hold every relationship in your head at once.
- Because this mock's verbal reasoning section is slightly longer, budget close to 45 seconds per question rather than a full minute, and do not let a single stubborn question eat into the rest of the section.
- In the final two minutes of each section, fill in a best guess for every unanswered question rather than leaving any blank.
Worked example
Verbal reasoning question: Missing number: 24 - 7 = 3 x ( ? ) + 2. Work out the missing number.
- Work out the side of the equation with no gap: 24 - 7 = 17.
- Set the other side equal to 17: 3 x (missing number) + 2 = 17.
- Subtract 2 from both sides to isolate the multiplication: 3 x (missing number) = 15.
- Divide both sides by 3 to find the missing number: 15 divided by 3 = 5.
- Final answer: the missing number is 5.

Answer: 365 (each term is multiplied by 3, then 1 is subtracted: 122 x 3 = 366, then 366 - 1 = 365).
Q58 is to 24 as 5 is to ( ? )Show answer
Answer: 15 (the rule is multiply by 3: 8 x 3 = 24, so 5 x 3 = 15).
Q6In a race, Owen finished before Priya. Priya finished before Ravi. Sana finished before Owen. Who finished first?Show answer
Answer: Sana (the finishing order is Sana, Owen, Priya, Ravi).
Q79 (28) 5 | 7 ( ? ) 4. The two outside numbers are added together, then the total is doubled. Work out the missing number.Show answer
Answer: 22 (7 + 4 = 11, and 11 doubled is 22; check the example: 9 + 5 = 14, doubled is 28).
