Sutton/SET-Style Maths Mock 4 continues the Sutton grammar schools' consortium multiple-choice maths format, moving on from Mock 3's fraction, decimal and percentage focus to measures, time and unit conversion questions, including timetables, duration and simple distance-speed-time problems, again with a separate answer sheet.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Before calculating, check what unit the answer needs to be given in, since Sutton-style measures questions often give information in one unit but ask for the answer in another.
- For time calculations that cross an hour boundary, work in minutes throughout rather than mixing hours and minutes, then convert your final answer back to hours and minutes if needed.
- For a distance-speed-time question, remember the relationship speed equals distance divided by time, and rearrange it to find whichever of the three values is missing.
- For a timetable question, read across the row or down the column carefully to find the correct departure and arrival times, since a common mistake is reading the wrong row.
- Convert all measurements to the same unit before adding, subtracting, comparing or checking them against answer options.
- Estimate roughly what size of answer to expect before calculating precisely, so you can immediately spot an answer option that is clearly the wrong order of magnitude.
Worked example
A train leaves at 09:45 and arrives at 11:20. How long, in hours and minutes, did the journey take? (a) 1 hour 25 minutes (b) 1 hour 35 minutes (c) 1 hour 45 minutes (d) 2 hours 25 minutes
- Find the time from 09:45 to 10:00: that is 15 minutes.
- Find the time from 10:00 to 11:20: that is 1 hour 20 minutes.
- Add the two parts together: 15 minutes plus 1 hour 20 minutes.
- Calculate: 15 + 20 = 35 minutes, plus the 1 hour, giving 1 hour 35 minutes.
- Check against the options: 1 hour 35 minutes matches option (b).
- Final answer: (b) 1 hour 35 minutes.
