Sutton/SET-Style Maths Mock 5 is the final mock in this practice series for the Sutton grammar schools' consortium multiple-choice maths format, bringing together arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratio and measures within multi-step worded problems rather than testing each skill in isolation.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- For any multi-step problem, read the whole question once before calculating anything, and identify how many separate steps it is likely to need.
- Break the problem into a numbered list of smaller calculations, working out and labelling one step at a time rather than attempting the whole problem in one line.
- After each step, check what that result represents in the context of the question, so you do not lose track of what still needs to be found.
- Because the answer options are given, use them to sanity-check a part-way result: if none of the options are close to your running total, recheck your working before continuing.
- Watch for a question that mixes several topics in one problem, such as a ratio step followed by a percentage step, since Mock 5 is designed to combine skills from earlier in the series.
- Keep a steady pace across the whole paper; a single demanding multi-step question is not worth spending time that could answer two or three simpler questions elsewhere.
Worked example
A school hall has 200 seats. Three-fifths of the seats are filled for a concert. Of the seats that are filled, 20% are reserved for staff. How many seats are filled by people who are not staff? (a) 80 (b) 90 (c) 96 (d) 120
- Find the number of filled seats: three-fifths of 200. 200 divided by 5 = 40, so 3 x 40 = 120 filled seats.
- Find the number of those filled seats reserved for staff: 20% of 120.
- Calculate 20% of 120: 120 divided by 5 = 24.
- Subtract the staff seats from the filled seats: 120 - 24 = 96.
- Check against the options: 96 matches option (c).
- Final answer: (c) 96.

Q3A tank holds 60 litres when full. It is currently 3/4 full. If 9 litres are removed, what fraction of the tank is now full?Show answer
Answer: 3/5 full (3/4 of 60 = 45 litres; 45 - 9 = 36 litres; 36/60 = 3/5).
Q4A class of 30 pupils has 40% boys. Half of the boys play football. How many boys do not play football?Show answer
Answer: 6 (40% of 30 = 12 boys; half of 12 = 6 play football; 12 - 6 = 6 do not).
Q5A journey of 150 miles is split so that the first 2/5 is driven on a motorway. How many miles remain after the motorway section?Show answer
Answer: 90 miles (2/5 of 150 = 60 miles; 150 - 60 = 90).
Q6A recipe for 8 people uses 320g of pasta. The amount is scaled up for 20 people, then a quarter of the total pasta is used for a starter. How much pasta, in grams, is used for the starter?Show answer
Answer: 200g (320/8 = 40g per person; 40 x 20 = 800g total; a quarter of 800 = 200g).
