GL-Style Maths Mock (Standalone)

The GL-Style Maths Mock (Standalone) is modelled on the standalone maths papers GL Assessment, the largest single provider of 11+ entrance tests in England, supplies to many grammar school consortia alongside their English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning tests. It covers arithmetic, word problems, fractions, percentages, ratio, measures, shape and data-handling questions, mixing short one-mark items with longer multi-step worded problems in a format that rewards speed and accuracy over long explanations.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Work through the paper in question order first, since GL maths papers are usually ordered from easier to harder, and skipping ahead can waste time on questions you are not ready for yet.
  2. For multiple-choice items, calculate the answer yourself before looking at the options, then match your answer to the closest option rather than guessing from the choices.
  3. For worded problems, underline the numbers and the operation words (total, difference, share, more than) before setting up your calculation.
  4. Keep working visible in the margin even on multiple-choice questions, so you can check it quickly if you have time left over.
  5. Do not spend more than about a minute on any single early question; if you are stuck, mark it and move on, then return at the end.
  6. In the last five minutes, recheck any calculation-heavy questions for arithmetic slips rather than starting new questions.

Worked example

A shop sells pens in packs of 8 for 3.20 pounds, or individually for 45 pence each. Sanjay needs 20 pens. What is the cheapest way for him to buy exactly 20 pens, and how much does it cost?

  1. Work out how many packs of 8 fit into 20: 20 / 8 = 2 remainder 4, so 2 full packs give 16 pens.
  2. Find the cost of 2 packs: 2 x 3.20 = 6.40 pounds.
  3. Find the number of pens still needed: 20 - 16 = 4 pens, bought individually.
  4. Find the cost of the remaining 4 pens: 4 x 0.45 = 1.80 pounds.
  5. Add the two amounts together: 6.40 + 1.80 = 8.20 pounds.
  6. Final answer: buy 2 packs of 8 and 4 individual pens, costing 8.20 pounds in total, which is cheaper than buying 20 individually (20 x 0.45 = 9.00 pounds).
