GL-Style Mixed Mock 13: Maths and Verbal Reasoning
The GL-Style Mixed Mock 13 is a full-length 11+ paper designed as an exam-day dress rehearsal, mixing a broad review of maths, place value and rounding, simple algebra, fractions and percentages, and angles, with a broad review of verbal reasoning, odd one out, word analogies, opposite in meaning, moving a letter and logic deduction. It assumes a pupil reaching this stage already knows the individual methods and now needs practice holding them together under full exam conditions.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Treat this mock as a full exam-day rehearsal: sit it in one go, in a quiet room, with the same equipment you would take to the real test, and time every section exactly rather than pausing partway through.
- By this stage you should recognise each verbal reasoning type on sight; if you catch yourself pausing to remember a rule mid-paper, note the type down afterwards and revisit that skill's own practice page before your next mock.
- Read every section's instructions once, carefully, then trust them; re-reading instructions partway through a section this late in preparation usually signals nerves, not that you have genuinely forgotten the rule.
- For a multi-step maths question, briefly plan what you need to find first, second and third before you start calculating, so a change of direction partway through does not cost you a whole rewritten page.
- If one question type is taking noticeably longer than the others today, do not stop to work out why mid-paper; flag it, make your best guess, move on, and return to that specific skill in your revision afterwards.
- Save the last few minutes of each section purely for checking: re-read your written answers against the question rather than re-solving from scratch, since a rushed re-solve is more likely to introduce a new error than catch the original one.
- Fill in a best guess for anything unanswered before time is called; an unanswered question and a wrong answer score exactly the same, so a guess can only help.
Worked example
Verbal reasoning question: Find the one letter that completes the word before the brackets and starts the word after the brackets: TRAI ( ? ) ORTH
- Read the word fragment before the brackets, TRAI, and test letters that could complete it to make a real word: TRAIN works (N); no other common letter completes TRAI into a real word.
- Read the word fragment after the brackets, ORTH, and test letters that could start it to make a real word: NORTH works (N); no other common letter starts ORTH as a real word.
- Compare the two findings: N is the letter that both completes the first word and starts the second word.
- Check the result: TRAIN is a correctly spelled real word, and NORTH is a correctly spelled real word.
- Final answer: N, since it completes TRAIN and starts NORTH.

Answer: B) Compulsory. Voluntary means done by choice, so its opposite is something you are required to do. Willing, Optional and Eager all mean much the same as voluntary, and Unpaid describes a lot of voluntary work without being its opposite.
Q8(CARD) (ART). Exactly one letter can move from the end of the first word to the front of the second word so that both words made are still correctly spelled real words. Which letter moves, and what are the two new words?Show answer
