Reasoning Practice Paper 7
Reasoning Practice Paper 7 is a full-length mock of a Year 6 SATs Mathematics Reasoning paper, giving mixed practice across the whole Key Stage 2 curriculum: number and place value, the four operations, measurement, geometry, statistics and algebra, all inside one timed test.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Look through the whole paper briefly before starting, so you have a sense of how many questions there are and roughly which topics they cover.
- Answer the questions in the order they appear, but do not get stuck on any single question - move on and return to a hard one later if there is time left at the end.
- Read every question twice: the first time to identify the topic, and the second time to spot the exact number, unit or command word being asked for.
- Show full working for every calculation, since method marks are available on multi-step questions even when the final answer turns out to be wrong.
- Check the unit and format the question actually asks for, such as 'give your answer in litres' or 'give your answer as a mixed number', because a correct number in the wrong form loses the mark.
- In the final few minutes, check the questions worth the most marks first, then make sure every question on the paper has been attempted.
Worked example
A school hall is being carpeted. Each roll of carpet costs 45 pounds and covers 6 square metres. The hall's floor area is 54 square metres. How many rolls of carpet are needed, and what is the total cost?
- Work out how many rolls are needed by dividing the total floor area by the area each roll covers: 54 divided by 6 = 9 rolls.
- Check the division gives a whole number of rolls with none wasted: 9 x 6 = 54, which matches the floor area exactly.
- Work out the total cost by multiplying the number of rolls by the cost of each roll: 9 x 45 pounds.
- Calculate 9 x 45 = 405.
- The school needs 9 rolls of carpet, costing 405 pounds in total.
