Reasoning Practice Paper 6
Reasoning Practice Paper 6 is a full-length mock of a Year 6 SATs Mathematics Reasoning paper, lasting 40 minutes and worth 40 marks, containing a mix of question types drawn from across the whole KS2 curriculum: number, fractions, ratio and proportion, algebra, measurement, geometry and statistics.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Skim the whole paper first if time allows, so you know roughly how many questions there are and which topics they cover.
- Work through the questions in order, but do not get stuck: if a question is taking too long, move on and come back to it at the end if there is time.
- Read each question twice before answering: the first read is for the topic, the second read is to spot the exact number, unit or command word being asked for.
- Show your working in the space given for every calculation question, since method marks are available on multi-step questions even if the final answer is wrong.
- Pay close attention to the units and format the question asks for (e.g. 'give your answer in kilograms' or 'give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form'), since a correct number in the wrong form can lose the mark.
- In the last few minutes, check the answers with the highest mark tariffs first, since they are the most valuable to get right, then check that every question has been attempted.
Worked example
A representative reasoning-paper question: A cinema sells adult tickets for £8.50 and child tickets for £5.25. A family buys 2 adult tickets and 3 child tickets. Work out the total cost.
- Identify the two amounts needed: the cost of 2 adult tickets and the cost of 3 child tickets.
- Calculate the cost of the adult tickets: 2 x £8.50 = £17.00.
- Calculate the cost of the child tickets: 3 x £5.25 = £15.75.
- Add the two totals together: £17.00 + £15.75 = £32.75.
- The total cost for the family is £32.75.
