Reasoning Practice Paper 9
Reasoning Practice Paper 9 is a full-length mock of a Year 6 SATs Mathematics Reasoning paper built around money, time, percentages and ratio, alongside the usual mix of number, calculation, measurement and algebraic reasoning questions.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Work through the paper steadily, spending roughly the same amount of time on questions worth the same number of marks.
- For a time question, add or subtract hours first, then minutes, rather than trying to do the whole calculation in one step.
- For a percentage question, find 10% by dividing by 10 first, then build up or down to the percentage actually needed by multiplying, halving or adding.
- For a money question, keep the pounds and pence lined up carefully, and write every amount to two decimal places so nothing is misread.
- For a ratio question, add the parts of the ratio to find the total number of parts before dividing the whole amount.
- Check every answer has the correct unit (pounds, minutes, or a time written as hh:mm) exactly as the question asks for it.
Worked example
A train journey starts at 09:45 and takes 2 hours 35 minutes. The ticket costs 24 pounds, but Tia has a railcard that gives her a 30% discount. At what time does the train arrive, and how much does Tia pay for her ticket?
- Add the hours of the journey to the start time: 09:45 + 2 hours = 11:45.
- Add the remaining minutes of the journey: 11:45 + 35 minutes = 12:20, so the train arrives at 12:20.
- Find 10% of the ticket price to help work out the discount: 10% of 24 pounds = 2.40 pounds.
- Multiply by 3 to find 30%: 2.40 x 3 = 7.20 pounds.
- Subtract the discount from the full price: 24 - 7.20 = 16.80 pounds.
- The train arrives at 12:20, and Tia pays 16.80 pounds for her ticket.
