Theme 2.1/2.3: Where I Live and the Environment - Listening Comprehension
Listening comprehension for Theme 2.1/2.3 (Where I live and the environment) tests whether a student can follow spoken Spanish that describes a town, house or region and then moves into wider environmental issues such as pollution, recycling and climate change. The examiner is checking recognition of place and housing vocabulary (las afueras, el barrio, un piso de alquiler), comparative structures used to contrast places (más tranquilo que, menos contaminado que), and the ability to follow a speaker's proposed solutions to environmental problems, which are often expressed with 'se debería' or with 'hay que' plus an infinitive.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- In the reading time, underline whether each question is asking about the speaker's home/area (descriptive) or about the environment (problem/solution), since these two halves of the theme use different vocabulary sets.
- Predict housing and local-area vocabulary: el piso, las afueras, el centro, el barrio, las tiendas, as well as environmental vocabulary: la contaminación, el reciclaje, el cambio climático, la sequía (drought), la basura.
- Listen for comparatives that rank two places against each other: 'más tranquilo que' (quieter than), 'menos ruidoso que' (less noisy than) and 'el lugar más contaminado' (the most polluted place, superlative) give the opposite meaning if attached to the wrong noun, so note which place each comparison actually describes.
- Track verb mood for proposed environmental solutions: 'hay que reciclar' (it is necessary to recycle) and 'se debería usar menos plástico' (people should use less plastic) describe what should happen, which is different from 'reciclamos' (we do recycle), a statement of current fact.
- Note cause-and-effect language: 'debido a' (due to), 'por eso' (that is why) and 'como resultado' (as a result) link an environmental problem to its consequence; make sure you record which is the cause and which is the effect.
- Catch numbers attached to environmental facts, such as percentages or years ('la temperatura ha subido dos grados desde mil novecientos noventa'), since these are common short-answer targets.
- Expect accent and vocabulary variation across Spanish-speaking regions describing climate and geography: 'la sequía' pronounced with seseo by a Latin American speaker sounds identical whether spelled with s, c or z, and a group of friends is addressed as 'ustedes' rather than 'vosotros'; some Latin American recordings describe wildfires, deforestation or drought realities not typical of Spain.
- When a speaker corrects an opinion or fact about their area (vivo en el centro... bueno, en realidad en las afueras), record only the corrected version, and re-check it against the actual question asked.
Worked example
You hear Elena describing her town and a local environmental problem. Transcript: 'Vivo en un pueblo pequeño en el norte de España, a las afueras... bueno, en realidad en el centro del pueblo. Es mucho más tranquilo que la ciudad donde vivía antes. El problema es que hay mucha contaminación del río debido a una fábrica cercana. Antes se podía nadar en el río, pero ahora ya no, porque el agua está muy sucia. En mi opinión, el ayuntamiento debería multar a la fábrica y también se debería limpiar el río cada año.' Answer in English: (a) Where exactly does Elena live? (b) How does her town compare to where she used to live? (c) What is the environmental problem, and its cause? (d) What does Elena think should be done?
- Reading time: underline 'where exactly', 'compare', 'problem and cause' and 'should be done' as the four things to extract.
- Catch the self-correction: a las afueras... bueno, en realidad en el centro - the corrected answer is the centre of the village, not the outskirts.
- Identify the comparative mucho más tranquilo que la ciudad (much quieter than the city) and attach it correctly to her current town compared with where she used to live.
- Follow the cause-effect link contaminación del río debido a una fábrica cercana (river pollution due to a nearby factory) to answer both the problem and its cause in one go.
- Identify the two 'debería' solutions: the council should fine the factory, and the river should be cleaned every year.
Practice questions

Q1What is the difference in meaning between 'las afueras' and 'el centro'?Show answer
Answer: 'Las afueras' means the outskirts (edge of town), while 'el centro' means the town/city centre - they describe opposite parts of a settlement.
Q2You hear 'Mi barrio es menos ruidoso que el centro.' Which place is being described as quieter?Show answer
Answer: The speaker's neighbourhood (barrio) is being described as quieter, or less noisy, than the town/city centre.
Q3Translate: 'Hay que reciclar más y usar menos plástico.'Show answer
Answer: It is necessary to recycle more and use less plastic.
Q4What is the difference between 'reciclamos' and 'deberíamos reciclar'?Show answer
Answer: 'Reciclamos' (we recycle) states a current fact/habit, while 'deberíamos reciclar' (we should recycle) is a recommendation about what ought to happen, not necessarily what is happening now.
Q5A speaker says 'la contaminación ha aumentado debido a las fábricas.' What does 'debido a' introduce?Show answer
Answer: 'Debido a' means 'due to' and introduces the cause of the problem just mentioned - here, factories are the cause of the increase in pollution.
Q6Why might a Latin American speaker's pronunciation of 'sequía' sound identical whether or not you can distinguish the letters c, z or s?Show answer
Answer: Because of seseo, most Latin American speakers pronounce c (before e/i), z and s all the same way, so spelling differences that rely on a 'th' sound are not audible.
Q7You hear 'Antes se podía nadar en el río, pero ahora ya no.' What tense is 'se podía' and what does the sentence mean overall?Show answer
Answer: 'Se podía' is imperfect (describing how things used to be); overall the sentence means 'You used to be able to swim in the river, but not anymore.'

Transcript of the recording: Escucha a Joaquín hablar de su barrio. Answer the following in English: (a) Where does Joaquín live, and how is the area described? (2 marks) (b) What is the most serious problem in his city, and what does it attract? (2 marks) (c) When did the city government add more recycling bins? (1 mark) (d) What solution does Joaquín propose? (1 mark)

Transcript of the recording: Escucha a Lucía hablar del cambio climático. 'El cambio climático me preocupa mucho. En mi región ha habido dos sequías graves en los últimos cinco años, y los agricultores han perdido muchas cosechas. La temperatura media ha subido casi dos grados desde mil novecientos noventa. Yo intento ayudar reciclando y ahorrando agua, pero creo que los gobiernos deberían hacer mucho más: por ejemplo, invertir en energía solar y eólica en vez de usar combustibles fósiles.' Answer the following in English: (a) How many serious droughts has the region had in the last five years, and with what effect on farmers? (2 marks) (b) By how much has the average temperature risen, and since when? (2 marks) (c) Name two things Lucía does personally to help. (2 marks) (d) What does she think governments should invest in instead of fossil fuels? (1 mark)
