Theme 2.3: Global Environmental Problems and Solutions
Reading comprehension for Theme 2.3 covers texts about global environmental issues such as climate change, deforestation, plastic pollution and natural disasters, together with proposed international solutions and calls for action. The examiner is testing whether a student can separate a described problem from a proposed solution within the same text, follow conditional or future warnings about consequences that have not yet happened (si no actuamos, será demasiado tarde), and register contrast connectives that introduce a limitation of a proposed solution (aunque reciclar ayuda, no es suficiente). This is a higher-tier theme with abstract, often scientific vocabulary and impersonal necessity structures.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Identify whether each paragraph describes a problem (causes and evidence) or a solution (a proposed or already-taken action), since texts on this theme are usually structured problem-then-solution and questions test which is which.
- Underline cause connectives (debido a, a causa de, como resultado de) linking human activity to an environmental consequence, such as la deforestación, las emisiones de CO2 or el deshielo (melting ice).
- Watch conditional and future warnings (si no reciclamos, el planeta sufrira) that describe a consequence which has not happened yet - do not mistake these hypothetical warnings for present-tense fact.
- Note contrast connectives (sin embargo, aunque, a pesar de, no obstante) that introduce a limitation of a proposed solution, such as aunque reciclar ayuda, no es suficiente (although recycling helps, it is not enough).
- Recognise impersonal necessity structures (hay que, se debe, es imprescindible) as calls to action rather than plain description.
- Track scale words (a nivel mundial, a nivel local, en todo el planeta) to answer whether a problem or solution is described as local or global.
- For statistics on temperature, emissions or species loss, note the exact figure and unit asked for, and whether the text describes a rise or a fall.
Worked example
Read this extract and decide whether the statement that follows is true, false or not mentioned.
- Identify the stated cause of deforestation: agriculture and cattle farming (la agricultura y la ganadería).
- Identify the future/conditional warning: si esta tendencia continúa, muchas especies podrían desaparecer - a consequence that has not happened yet.
- Notice the connective sin embargo, which introduces a contrasting, more positive point.
- Read the contrasting point: some governments have begun protecting specific areas of the rainforest - this directly contradicts the statement that no government has acted, so the statement is false.

(a) How does plastic endanger marine species, according to the text? (b) Why does the problem keep getting worse over time? (c) Name one action mentioned that organisations or countries have taken. (d) What warning do experts give about the future? (e) What do experts say needs to change to avoid this warning?
