Theme 2.1/2.3: Where I live and the environment - Reading comprehension
Reading comprehension for Theme 2.1/2.3, where I live and the environment, covers texts that describe a person's home town or city and give an opinion of it, alongside personal environmental habits and problems affecting the local area, such as pollution, traffic and recycling. The examiner is testing whether a student can separate factual description of a place from opinion about it, use location prepositions (al lado de, cerca de, en las afueras de) accurately, and follow comparative statements between two places. This topic focuses on the writer's own town or local environment, in contrast with global environmental issues, which are covered separately.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Separate description of the place itself (hay un parque, mi ciudad es histórica) from opinion about it (lo que más/menos me gusta de mi barrio es), since questions often specifically ask for the downside or the best feature.
- Underline location prepositions (al lado de, cerca de, en las afueras de, en el centro) to answer where something is located accurately.
- Note comparative statements between two places (el campo es más tranquilo que la ciudad, mi pueblo es menos ruidoso que la capital) and identify exactly which side of the comparison carries the positive quality.
- Track present-tense environmental habits (reciclamos, apagamos las luces, vamos andando al instituto) as personal actions, keeping them separate from stated local problems (hay mucha contaminación, faltan contenedores de reciclaje).
- Watch negatives about what a place lacks (no hay bastante transporte público, no existe un centro comercial cerca), since the lack itself, not the missing thing alone, is usually the answer.
- Spot cause-and-effect connectives (por eso, ya que, como consecuencia) linking a local problem to its stated cause.
- Distinguish hypothetical improvement wishes (deberia haber, seria mejor si) from statements of current fact, since these describe what someone wants to change, not what already exists.
Worked example
Read this extract and decide whether the statement that follows is true, false or not mentioned.
- Notice the connective sin embargo, which signals that a contrasting, more negative point follows.
- Identify the negative opinion: no hay mucho que hacer para los jóvenes los fines de semana (there is not much for young people to do at weekends).
- Compare this to the statement, which claims there are lots of activities for young people - this directly contradicts the negative point in the text, so the statement is false.

Exam-style questions
Written in the style of a GCSE Spanish exam paper, with a full mark scheme.
(a) What does the writer like about the historic centre of Valladolid? (b) How does the writer usually get around the city, and why? (c) What does the writer dislike about the climate? (d) What problem does the writer mention about the city centre, and what is the stated consequence? (e) What does the writer think the city should invest more in, and why?
