Theme 1.2: Technology in Everyday Life
Theme 1.2 reading comprehension, on technology in everyday life, covers texts about social media, screen time, mobile phones and online safety in teenage life, including texts that weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of technology. The examiner is testing whether a student can follow a balanced argument structured por un lado / por otro lado, register when a contrast connective such as sin embargo, no obstante or aunque reverses the tone of the previous sentence, and separate a stated fact about technology use from a personal opinion of it. Because this theme often argues both sides of a question, tracking whose view a given sentence represents is a key higher-tier skill.

Method
- Identify whether the text argues for technology, against it, or presents both sides using por un lado / por otro lado, since a question may ask specifically which side a given statement belongs to.
- Underline connectives that flip the argument: sin embargo, no obstante, aunque, a pesar de - the sentence that follows one of these very often reverses the tone of the sentence before it, which is a classic higher-tier trap for students who stop reading too early.
- Note time and quantity expressions (paso tres horas al día en el móvil, uso las redes sociales todos los días) for questions asking how much time or how often.
- Learn online-safety vocabulary (contraseña, datos personales, acoso cibernetico, desconocidos) since these words usually signal a warning or a piece of advice rather than a simple description.
- Distinguish a stated fact (los adolescentes usan mucho el móvil) from a personal opinion (creo que es peligroso), since some questions ask specifically whose view a statement represents.
- Watch negation of an expected benefit or drawback (no es solo negativo, no sirve para nada), which can reverse the meaning you would otherwise expect.
- When a question asks for two advantages or two disadvantages, make sure each point selected is genuinely a separate idea, not the same point expressed a second time in different words.
Worked example
Read this extract and decide whether the statement that follows is true, false or not mentioned. Texto: Las redes sociales tienen muchas ventajas, por ejemplo nos permiten mantener el contacto con amigos que viven lejos. Sin embargo, pasar demasiado tiempo conectado puede afectar negativamente al sueño y a la concentración en los estudios. Afirmación: Según el texto, las redes sociales solo tienen ventajas y ningún inconveniente.
- Read the first sentence, which lists an advantage: mantener el contacto con amigos que viven lejos (staying in touch with friends who live far away).
- Notice the connective sin embargo, which signals a contrasting, more negative point is about to follow.
- Read the second sentence, which gives a disadvantage: it can negatively affect sleep and concentration on studies.
- Because the text clearly presents both an advantage and a disadvantage, the statement claiming there are only advantages is false.
