Global Issues: Natural Disasters and Charitable Aid
Translation on natural disasters and charitable aid is a higher-tier GCSE Spanish topic covering both directions of translation, testing the preterite for narrating events, the pluperfect for what had already happened, and real or hypothetical conditional sentences.

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Use the preterite to narrate the disaster event itself (el terremoto destruyó, el huracán afectó), keeping every main verb in a single, consistent past tense.
- Use the pluperfect (había perdido, habían evacuado) for an action that had already happened before another past moment, essential for sequencing a disaster account correctly.
- Translate real conditional sentences (si + present, + future) for likely outcomes: si no ayudamos ahora, la situación empeorará; and hypothetical conditionals (si + imperfect subjunctive, + conditional) for less certain outcomes: si tuviéramos más recursos, podríamos ayudar a más gente.
- Translate large numbers and quantifiers precisely: miles de personas (thousands of people), la mayoria de las viviendas (most of the homes), un tercio de la población (a third of the population), keeping de after the quantity expression.
- Translate charity-specific vocabulary by meaning, not word for word: recaudar fondos (to raise funds), donar (to donate), una organización benefica/una ONG (a charity/an NGO), prestar ayuda (to give aid).
- Use the personal a before the people helped or affected as a direct object (ayudar a los damnificados, evacuar a los habitantes), since this group is always a specific set of people.
- Check tense sequencing last: confirm the pluperfect event genuinely happened before the preterite event it is attached to, rather than translating every past verb the same way.
Worked example
Translate into Spanish: The earthquake destroyed thousands of homes, and many families had already lost everything before the aid arrived. If more countries donated money, we could help more people.
- Split into chunks: 'The earthquake destroyed thousands of homes' / 'and many families had already lost everything before the aid arrived' / 'If more countries donated money, we could help more people'.
- 'The earthquake destroyed thousands of homes' is a single completed past action, preterite: el terremoto destruyó miles de viviendas.
- 'many families had already lost everything before the aid arrived' needs the pluperfect for the earlier action and the preterite for the later one: muchas familias ya habían perdido todo antes de que llegara la ayuda.
- 'If more countries donated money, we could help more people' is a hypothetical condition, so imperfect subjunctive + conditional: si más países donaran dinero, podríamos ayudar a más gente.
- Full translation: El terremoto destruyó miles de viviendas, y muchas familias ya habían perdido todo antes de que llegara la ayuda. Si más países donaran dinero, podríamos ayudar a más gente.
