Food, Family Celebrations and Regional Customs
Translation on food, family celebrations and regional customs is a GCSE Spanish topic covering both directions of translation, testing gustar and encantar with food, combined object pronouns, the imperfect for repeated childhood memories, and culture-specific vocabulary such as la sobremesa.

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Identify gustar-type opinions about food and match the verb to the food item, not the person: me encantan las tapas (plural food, plural verb), me encanta el gazpacho (singular food, singular verb).
- Combine indirect and direct object pronouns correctly when both appear: the indirect pronoun comes first and le/les becomes se before lo/la/los/las, so mi abuela me lo preparaba means my grandmother used to make it for me.
- Use the imperfect for repeated childhood memories connected to food and family (mi abuela siempre cocinaba, preparabamos juntos), since these describe habitual past actions, not one-off events.
- Translate possessive and demonstrative adjectives precisely: nuestra receta familiar (our family recipe), esta costumbre (this custom, close to the speaker), aquella época (that time, further in the past), choosing based on distance in time as well as space.
- Translate regional-custom vocabulary by meaning rather than literally: la sobremesa (the time spent chatting at the table after a meal), el aperitivo (a pre-meal snack/drink), reunirse en torno a la mesa (to gather around the table).
- Watch food-related false friends: la comida can mean food, lunch or a meal depending on context, and postre (dessert) must not be confused with postal (postcard).
- Check agreement and pronoun order last: possessive adjectives agree in number, and for nuestro/vuestro in gender, with the thing owned, and combined object pronouns must appear in the correct se lo/te lo/nos lo order.
Worked example
Translate into Spanish: When I was little, my grandmother used to make this recipe for me every Sunday, and my whole family would gather around the table. I love traditional food, especially desserts.
- Split into chunks: 'When I was little, my grandmother used to make this recipe for me every Sunday' / 'and my whole family would gather around the table' / 'I love traditional food, especially desserts'.
- 'When I was little' and 'used to make' are both repeated past habits, so the imperfect: cuando era pequeña, mi abuela me preparaba esta receta todos los domingos.
- 'and my whole family would gather around the table' continues the imperfect with a reflexive verb: y toda mi familia se reunía en torno a la mesa.
- 'I love traditional food, especially desserts' uses encantar with a plural food subject for desserts: me encanta la comida tradicional, sobre todo los postres.
- Full translation: Cuando era pequeña, mi abuela me preparaba esta receta todos los domingos, y toda mi familia se reunía en torno a la mesa. Me encanta la comida tradicional, sobre todo los postres.
