Maths: Full Practice Paper (Core, Calculator, Set 3)
This is the third full practice paper for the Core Calculator Maths paper, the calculator-allowed partner to the Core Non-Calculator paper that every 13+ candidate sits, giving another complete timed paper across number, percentages, geometry, algebra and statistics.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Write down the numbers and the operation you plan to use before touching the calculator, so your method stays visible even if a key is mis-pressed.
- Use brackets or the calculator's memory function for a multi-step calculation, rather than rounding an intermediate answer and typing it back in.
- Estimate each answer by rounding before calculating, then check the calculator's answer is a sensible size for the question.
- Apply a rounding instruction (decimal places, significant figures, nearest penny) only to your final answer, keeping full accuracy in every earlier step.
- Read any table, graph or chart carefully, noting the exact values needed before starting to calculate.
- Include the correct units in every answer, since this paper regularly mixes money, length, area, volume and time in the same question.
- Manage your time by mark value, and check that every part of a multi-part question has been fully answered before moving on.
Worked example
Jamal invests 740 pounds in a savings account that pays 4% simple interest per year. Work out the total amount in the account after 5 years.
- Find one year's interest: 4% of 740 = 740 x 0.04 = 29.60 pounds.
- Since it is simple interest, the same interest is added every year, so multiply by 5: 29.60 x 5 = 148.
- Add the total interest to the original amount: 740 + 148 = 888.
- So the account holds 888 pounds after 5 years.
