A window cleaner uses the formula C = 9w + 20 to work out his charge, where C is the cost in pounds and w is the number of windows he cleans. Find the charge for cleaning 12 windows, and work out how many windows he cleaned if he charged 173 pounds.
- Substitute w = 12 into C = 9w + 20: C = 9 x 12 + 20.
- Work out 9 x 12 = 108, so C = 108 + 20 = 128. Cleaning 12 windows costs 128 pounds.
- To find w when C = 173, write the equation 9w + 20 = 173.
- Subtract 20 from both sides: 9w = 153.
- Divide both sides by 9: w = 17.
