In this test, each question shows how a word is turned into a number code, usually by giving one or two example words together with their codes. Work out the rule connecting the letters and the numbers, then apply exactly the same rule to answer the question. The rule may be a simple position in the alphabet (A=1, B=2, up to Z=26), the position with a number added or subtracted, the position doubled, or the position counted from the end of the alphabet instead (Z=1, Y=2, and so on). Some questions give you a word and ask for its code; others give you a code and ask you to work out the word. Choose the one option, A to E, that is correct. Study the worked example above before you begin.
Worked example. If the code for CAT is 3-1-20, what is the code for DOG? Answer: 4-15-7. Each letter is replaced by its position in the alphabet, counting A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on up to Z=26. So C=3, A=1, T=20, giving CAT the code 3-1-20. Using the same rule, D=4, O=15, G=7, so DOG has the code 4-15-7.
