In this test, each question begins by showing how one or two words have been changed into number codes. Work out the rule that links the letters to the numbers, then use exactly the same rule to answer the question that follows. The rule may simply be each letter's position in the alphabet (A=1, B=2, up to Z=26), that position with a number added or taken away, the position doubled, or the position counted backwards from the end of the alphabet instead (Z=1, Y=2, and so on). Some questions give you a word and ask for its code; others give you a code and ask you to work out the word it stands for. Pick the one option, A to E, that matches. Look carefully at the worked example above before starting.
Worked example. If the code for PIG is 16-9-7, what is the code for OWL? Answer: 15-23-12. Each letter is replaced by its position in the alphabet, counting A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on up to Z=26. So P=16, I=9, G=7, giving PIG the code 16-9-7. Using the same rule, O=15, W=23, L=12, so OWL has the code 15-23-12.
