A river has flooded 4 times in the last 40 years. Calculate the average return period (the average number of years between floods) for this river.
- Note the total time period and number of events: 40 years, 4 floods.
- Write down the return period formula: return period = total number of years / number of events.
- Substitute the values: 40 / 4.
- Calculate: 40 / 4 = 10.
- State the final answer: average return period = 10 years, meaning a flood occurs on average once every 10 years.
Classify a volcanic ash cloud disrupting flights as a geophysical, atmospheric or hydrological hazard.
