GL-Style Full Mixed Mock 14
GL-Style Full Mixed Mock 14 is a full mixed 11+ paper modelled on a GL-style test that includes English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning in one sitting. It focuses on the maths and numerical reasoning content, particularly perimeter, area and measures problems set as short, discrete questions alongside worded problems, in the same fast-paced format as the earlier full mixed mocks in this series.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Before calculating a perimeter, check whether every side length is given or whether some need to be worked out first from the shape's known properties, such as opposite sides of a rectangle being equal.
- For an area question involving a compound shape made of two or more simple shapes joined together, split it into simple rectangles or triangles, find each part's area separately, then add them together.
- Check the units given in the question and the units the answer needs to be given in, converting if necessary, since perimeter and area questions often mix centimetres and metres.
- For a worded measures problem, extract the key numbers and the operation needed before calculating, exactly as you would for any other numerical reasoning question in a GL-style paper.
- Move through short discrete questions at a brisk, steady pace, since GL-style maths and numerical reasoning questions are usually worth similar marks each.
- Where time allows at the end of the section, recheck any calculation involving a unit conversion or a compound shape, since these are the most common places to lose an otherwise correct answer.
Worked example
A rectangular lawn measures 8 metres by 5 metres. A path 1 metre wide runs around the outside of the lawn. What is the area of the path alone?
- Find the area of the lawn: 8 x 5 = 40 square metres.
- Find the outer dimensions of the lawn plus the path: since the path is 1 metre wide on every side, the outer rectangle is (8 + 1 + 1) by (5 + 1 + 1), which is 10 metres by 7 metres.
- Find the area of the outer rectangle: 10 x 7 = 70 square metres.
- Subtract the lawn's area from the outer area to find the path's area alone: 70 - 40.
- Final answer: the area of the path is 30 square metres.

Q1Find the perimeter of a rectangle measuring 12 cm by 7 cm.Show answer
Answer: 38 cm (2 x (12 + 7) = 2 x 19 = 38).
Q2Find the area of a rectangle measuring 9 m by 4 m.Show answer
Answer: 36 square metres (9 x 4 = 36).
Q3A square has a perimeter of 32 cm. What is the length of one side?Show answer
Answer: 8 cm (32 divided by 4 = 8).
Q4A triangle has a base of 10 cm and a height of 6 cm. Find its area.Show answer
Answer: 30 square cm (0.5 x 10 x 6 = 30).
Q5A rectangular field measures 20 m by 15 m. A farmer wants to put a fence around it. How many metres of fencing are needed?Show answer
Answer: 70 metres (2 x (20 + 15) = 70).
Q6A shape is made of a 6 cm by 4 cm rectangle with a 6 cm by 2 cm rectangle attached to one side, making an L-shape. What is the total area of the L-shape?Show answer
Answer: 36 square cm (6 x 4 = 24, 6 x 2 = 12, 24 + 12 = 36).
