Kent Test-Style Mock 6 focuses on the Maths paper of the Kent Test, the 11+ used to select entry to Kent's grammar schools on behalf of Kent County Council, bringing together measures, time and percentage-change questions, such as price increases, discounts and unit conversions, within worded problems.

Method
- For a percentage-increase or percentage-decrease question, find the amount of the increase or decrease first, then add it to or subtract it from the original amount, rather than trying to calculate the new amount directly in one step unless you are confident with that method.
- Check carefully whether a question asks for the new amount after a change, or only for the size of the change itself, since these are easy to confuse under time pressure.
- For a measures question involving conversion, such as between millilitres and litres or grams and kilograms, convert every value to the same unit before calculating.
- For a multi-step measures or money problem, extract each piece of given information and label what it represents before deciding what to calculate first.
- Estimate a sensible range for your final answer before calculating exactly, so that an error of a wrong order of magnitude is easy to spot.
- Keep a steady, practised pace through the paper, since Kent-style maths papers mix straightforward and multi-step questions of similar value throughout.
Worked example
A coat originally costs 64 pounds. It is reduced by 15% in a sale. What is the sale price?
- Find the amount of the reduction: 15% of 64 pounds.
- Calculate 10% of 64: 6.40 pounds, and 5% of 64: 3.20 pounds.
- Add these together to find 15%: 6.40 + 3.20 = 9.60 pounds.
- Subtract the reduction from the original price: 64 - 9.60.
- Final answer: the sale price is 54.40 pounds.
