KENT TEST-STYLE MOCK 6. The real Kent Test (the selection test used by Kent's grammar schools, set by GL Assessment) is sat across two timed papers on the same day: Paper 1 combines English and Maths, and Paper 2 combines Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning; a short separate writing task is also set, and is used only for candidates on the borderline. This pack drills the three most heavily text-based components together in a single timed sitting - Maths, Verbal Reasoning and English comprehension - all in the five-option (A to E) multiple-choice format the real test uses. It is a sixth, entirely separate section-mix mock from EP.T5, EP.T11, EP.T20, EP.T31 and EP.T45, with new maths questions, four brand new verbal reasoning question types and a brand new comprehension text, for further practice. It does not cover Non-Verbal Reasoning; pair this pack with the EP.N series (EP.N1 to EP.N13) for full NVR practice, so that between the two you cover every strand of the real test. Total time allowed: 44 minutes across three sections, taken in order - once a section's time is up, move on and do not turn back to it. SECTION 1: MATHS (20 minutes, Questions 1-20, no calculator allowed) - 20 multiple-choice questions that start straightforward and build up to harder multi-step word problems. SECTION 2: VERBAL REASONING (12 minutes, Questions 21-40) - 20 multiple-choice questions across four named question types, five questions per type: Insert a Letter, Letter-Value Codes, Age Problems and Queue Position Logic. SECTION 3: ENGLISH COMPREHENSION (12 minutes, Questions 41-52) - read the source text above once carefully, then answer 12 multiple-choice questions covering comprehension, vocabulary in context, inference, structure and SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). Every question across all three sections is worth 1 mark, with exactly one correct option from A) to E). There is no negative marking, so attempt every question, and use any time left at the end of a section to check your answers before moving on. Total marks available: 52.

The Letterbox on Hound Tor

Eleven-year-old Zainab Hussain trudged up the springy turf of Dartmoor, the wind tugging at her waterproof jacket and carrying the faint smell of damp bracken. Her uncle, Desmond Clarke, strode a few steps ahead, a folded paper clue gripped firmly in one gloved hand.

"Nearly there," he called back, glancing at a weathered granite outcrop rising from the moor like a broken tooth. "The clue says to look for the letterbox thirty paces north-east of the tallest rock at Hound Tor, hidden beneath a slab."

Zainab quickened her pace, her boots squelching through a boggy patch she had tried and failed to skirt around. Letterboxing, her uncle had explained on the drive down from Exeter, was a tradition almost unique to Dartmoor: hikers hid small waterproof boxes across the moor, each containing a rubber stamp and a logbook, and left clues for others to follow. Anyone who found a box would stamp their own notebook with its design, then leave a stamp of their own inside before hiding it again exactly where they had found it.

"People have been doing this since Victorian times," Desmond said, pausing to check his compass. "The very first letterbox was hidden near Cranmere Pool, over a hundred and fifty years ago. Back then walkers left postcards instead of stamps, and whoever found the box would post them onward."

At the base of the tor, Desmond counted his paces carefully, then crouched beside a flat slab half-buried in heather. "Here," he murmured, working his fingers beneath its edge until the stone shifted. Underneath sat a small tin, its lid rusted at the corners but still watertight.

Zainab knelt and eased it open. Inside, wrapped in a plastic bag, lay a rubber stamp carved into the shape of a running hare, and a logbook filled with faded ink entries stretching back years: names, dates, brief messages from walkers who had stood in this exact spot.

"Some of these are older than me," Zainab said, turning the pages carefully.

"That's the point," Desmond replied. "A letterbox connects everyone who's ever found it, even if they never meet. Go on, stamp your book."

Zainab pressed the hare stamp firmly into her own notebook, then unwrapped the spare stamp she had carved at home from a rubber eraser: a small, lopsided crescent moon. She inked it carefully and pressed it into the logbook, adding her own initials and today's date beneath it.

Together they wrapped the tin back in its bag and slid it beneath the slab, brushing loose soil over the disturbed heather so the hiding place looked untouched.

"Someone else will find that in a week, or a year, or ten years," Desmond said, straightening up. "And they'll never know it was us who left it."

Zainab looked back at the tor as they set off across the moor, already wondering who might stumble across her small crescent moon, and when.

Worked example. Worked example (Letter-Value Codes): If ARM is coded as 32 (A=1, R=18, M=13, 1+18+13=32), using the same rule (each letter's code is its position in the alphabet, added together), what is the code for LEG? Answer: 24. L=12, E=5, G=7. 12+5+7=24. Always add the alphabet position of every letter in the word to find its code, then check the total against both example words before applying the rule to a new one.
