Northern Ireland (AQE)-Style Mock
The Northern Ireland (AQE)-Style Mock is modelled on the transfer test set by AQE (the Association for Quality Education), one of two 11+ transfer tests used in Northern Ireland for grammar school entry, alongside the separate GL-based test used by the PPTC group of schools. AQE blends English and mathematics content within its questions rather than testing them separately, and this mock focuses on the maths side: number, calculation, measures and problem-solving questions presented as short, standalone items.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Confirm which transfer test (AQE or the alternative GL-based test) your target school actually uses before you start revising, since the two are not identical in format.
- Work through maths questions methodically, reading each one twice if needed, since AQE-style questions can combine more than one step within a single short question.
- Underline the key numbers and the operation being asked for in worded questions before starting your calculation.
- Show your working clearly even on short questions, since partial credit can be available for a correct method with a small arithmetic slip.
- Keep track of time carefully, moving on from any question that is taking too long and returning to it later if time allows.
- In any time left at the end, recheck calculations using a quick estimate (rounding numbers) rather than starting new, unfamiliar questions.
Worked example
A farmer has 84 sheep. He sells 3/7 of them at a market, then buys 15 more. How many sheep does the farmer have now?
- Find how many sheep are sold: 3/7 of 84 is 84 / 7 x 3.
- Calculate: 84 / 7 = 12, then 12 x 3 = 36 sheep sold.
- Find how many sheep remain after selling: 84 - 36 = 48 sheep.
- Add the sheep bought afterwards: 48 + 15.
- Calculate: 48 + 15 = 63.
- Final answer: the farmer now has 63 sheep.
