Sutton Boys' Second Stage Examination

Boys who reach the pass mark in the Sutton SET sit one further examination in early October, shared by Wilson's, Sutton Grammar and Wallington County Grammar. It is two written papers, Mathematics and English, with answers written out rather than chosen from a list. The three schools sit the same papers but each applies its own selective-ability criteria and its own weighting, which is why a boy can be offered a place at one and not another. There are 20 free mock papers for it below.

One sitting on a Saturday in early October, taken only by boys invited after the SET. The papers are written and school-authored rather than set by an examination board. Each school then combines the SET score with the second-stage scores in its own way: Wilson's weights them 1 : 2 : 2 and requires a pass in both second-stage papers, Wallington County Grammar counts the SET as two fifths of the total, and Sutton Grammar publishes that it combines the two without stating a ratio.

Mathematics (written)

50 minutes · 22 questions · Written answers

Tests: Multi-step word problems; Number, the four operations and order of operations; Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio; Measurement and unit conversion and more.

  • The school publishes no detail for this paper.
  • Officially confirmed: a written paper rather than multiple choice, of roughly 45 minutes to an hour, based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum. The schools state that they do not release specimen papers.
  • The question count, the mark total, the timing within that range and whether method is credited are all genuinely unpublished. Every one of those numbers in our papers is a reconstruction, chosen to be a fair rehearsal rather than a claim about the real paper.
  • Two independent accounts report that this paper leans into probability, data handling and geometry - the things a multiple-choice first stage cannot test well. We have weighted our papers that way, but it is inference, not published fact.

English (written)

50 minutes · 1 questions · Written answers

Tests: Extended writing in response to a supplied stimulus; Following the task instructions precisely; Planning before writing; Genre conventions: report, letter, diary, narrative continuation, viewpoint writing and more.

  • The school publishes no detail for this paper.
  • Officially confirmed: a written English paper of roughly 45 minutes to an hour, not multiple choice, with no specimen papers released.
  • Consistent independent accounts describe it as an extended writing task responding to supplied stimulus material, with the reported marking emphasis falling on following the task instructions, planning, quality of writing and vocabulary. We have built to that description and say so plainly.
  • The number of pieces, any choice of titles, the mark scheme and the mark total are unpublished. Ours is a reconstruction.
  • The four National Curriculum writing triplets belong to the girls' schools' second stage, not this one. Do not assume the boys' paper uses that framework.

What the schools do not publish

  • Question counts, mark totals and mark schemes for both papers.
  • The exact duration within the published range of roughly 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Whether working or method is credited in Mathematics.
  • Who marks the papers.
  • Sutton Grammar's exact ratio for combining the SET score with the second-stage scores.
  • Any specimen or sample material. None of the three schools publishes any for this stage, which is why our papers here carry heavier caveats than the Sutton SET or the girls' second stage.
