What this paper tests

  • Extended writing in response to a supplied stimulus
  • Following the task instructions precisely
  • Planning before writing
  • Genre conventions: report, letter, diary, narrative continuation, viewpoint writing
  • Vocabulary range and precision
  • Structure, paragraphing and cohesion
  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar within continuous prose

What is official, and what is our reconstruction

  • Officially confirmed: a written English paper of roughly 45 minutes to an hour, not multiple choice, with no specimen papers released.
  • Consistent independent accounts describe it as an extended writing task responding to supplied stimulus material, with the reported marking emphasis falling on following the task instructions, planning, quality of writing and vocabulary. We have built to that description and say so plainly.
  • The number of pieces, any choice of titles, the mark scheme and the mark total are unpublished. Ours is a reconstruction.
  • The four National Curriculum writing triplets belong to the girls' schools' second stage, not this one. Do not assume the boys' paper uses that framework.

The papers

The set is a ladder, not interchangeable papers. Work through them in order: the early papers are for getting used to the format, and the last is a genuinely competitive simulation.
