For hundreds of years, no beaver lived wild in England. Hunted for their fur, and for a musky substance once used in perfume and medicine, the last wild beavers vanished from English rivers around the sixteenth century. For centuries, nobody expected to see one splashing through a British stream again.
That changed in 2013, when a small population of beavers was found living secretly on the River Otter in Devon. Nobody had released them officially, and their origin remains something of a mystery, though most experts believe they had escaped, or been illegally released, from a private collection nearby. Rather than removing the animals, conservationists persuaded the government to allow a five-year study, monitoring the beavers and the effect they had on the river and the surrounding land.
Beavers are often described as ecosystem engineers, because of the dramatic way they reshape their surroundings. Using their powerful teeth, they gnaw through branches and small trees, dragging the wood into streams to build dams. These dams slow the flow of water, creating ponds and wetlands that would not otherwise exist. Although a new dam can look messy at first, the wetland habitat it creates soon attracts an extraordinary range of wildlife, from dragonflies and otters to herons and water voles.
The River Otter study produced striking results. Researchers found that the beavers' dams reduced the risk of flooding downstream, because the ponds held back rainwater during storms and released it more slowly afterwards. The wetlands also acted as a natural filter, trapping soil and pollution that would otherwise wash straight into rivers, and improving water quality. Fish populations, previously in decline, appeared to benefit too, since the deeper pools gave young fish somewhere safe to shelter.
Not every landowner has welcomed the return of the beaver, however. Farmers whose fields lie close to rivers have raised concerns that flooded land could be lost to agriculture, and some worry that dams might block irrigation channels or damage riverbank trees they value. In response, wildlife trusts have worked with farmers to manage individual dams where necessary, sometimes fitting devices that allow water to flow through at a controlled level rather than removing the dam altogether.
Following the success of the Devon trial, the government announced in 2020 that beavers could remain permanently on the River Otter, and further licensed releases have since taken place in fenced sites across England, Wales and Scotland. Campaigners continue to push for wider, unfenced reintroduction, arguing that beavers could play an important role in tackling flooding and restoring biodiversity as climate change makes extreme weather more common. Whether beavers one day become a common sight on rivers across the whole of Britain, as they once were centuries ago, remains to be seen. For now, though, after a five-hundred-year absence, nature's engineers are cautiously being welcomed home.
