What this paper tests
- Spelling: choosing the correct spelling from five near-misses
- Retrieval from a line-referenced passage
- Best-explanation inference, where every option is partly true
- Vocabulary in context and shades of connotation
- Negative questions: which statement is NOT correct
- Select all that apply, with partial credit
- Comparison across two contrasting texts
What is official, and what is our reconstruction
- Officially confirmed: four sections in this order, with recommended timings of 5, 25, 10 and 10 minutes. The timings are advice, not rules - a candidate may spend longer on a section and go back to earlier questions.
- Officially confirmed: five options A to E on every question, a separate machine-read answer sheet, no negative marking, and no rough paper.
- The question count is not published. Ours is built from the official section timings and matches independent reports of the current paper. Treat 62 as a realistic reconstruction, not a fact.
- Two marking rules are official and unusual. A 'select the two most accurate' question scores nothing unless both are chosen, and nothing if three or more are. An open 'select all that apply' question gives partial credit, but ticking every option scores zero.
- The comparison section was added around September 2021. Any practice material without it describes the old paper.
The papers
The set is a ladder, not interchangeable papers. Work through them in order: the early papers are for getting used to the format, and the last is a genuinely competitive simulation.
