  1. Read the sentence and find where a list follows an introductory statement.
  2. The introductory part is 'Ali packed three things for the trip' and the list is 'a torch, a map and a compass'.
  3. Insert a colon immediately after 'trip' and before the list begins.
  4. Add commas to separate the items in the list: torch, map, compass.
  5. Final answer: Ali packed three things for the trip: a torch, a map and a compass.
